South Africa's Electric Car

I sincerely hope that this makes it into production. Optimal Energy, a privately owned South African company based in Cape Town, plans to start selling their electric 'baby' Joule in 2010 for between R200 000 and R250 000, and while locally this is a wee bit pricey it should be seen as a precursor for future, more affordable vehicles with more of a mass market appeal.
While we naturally suspect that we will not have the electricity to recharge our newly purchased Joule, we must remember our electricity shortfall only happens during peak usage hours, so we can happily plug our car in overnight with the knowledge that we are not over-burdening the national electricity grid.

SA Braai Day (Video)

I am not convinced that there is a necessity for a National Braai Day, or that we need to know in advance when it is to be prepared. Here in SA we are always ready to 'gooi vleis' on the grid. Nevertheless I found this video on Zoopy straight after ready this post @Bristol Soapbox and figured this must be a sign to share with my readers.

Men, laugh out loud, ladies watch, enjoy, nod your head knowingly and then forget you watched it!

Braai Day is on the 24th September - for more info go to www.braaiday.co.za

YouTube ... Zoopy ... MyVideo ... there's more

Mooziko has added it's name into the video sharing game. It has some way to go before it becomes a major player, even when compared to Zoopy & MyVideo, however I like the idea of having something African-centric (as opposed to the latter two's South African dominated content.) While Mooziko still looks a little too much like a YouTube clone, something Zoopy has managed to avoid nicely, it definitely has a African feel to it.
With broadband penetration in Africa still in it's infancy, it is understandable that there is not that many videos available to view yet. The creators really to need to catch on to the viral nature of this medium. The omission of an embedding option is glaring. Having said that, if they can keep plugging away, their is a lot of potential in this market, which has a different set of values and interests than the American audiences, a difference which Mooziko can exploit.

Mutant Springboks - What does it mean?

Why does it now need to take 30mins to read out 3o names?

On Saturday Supersport viewers had to endure a painful half-an-hour of dancing, prancing, missed cues and the president of SA Rugby reading the name of the captain of the Springboks off a piece of crumpled paper. If you missed this riveting piece of television, click here, although I strongly advise against it. Why we need to see dancers running around a stage imitating springboks and mutants rappelling from the ceiling at a team announcement, beats me.

Believe it or not that is not the topic of this post however. The new advert for the Springbok rugby team was flighted for the first time during this 30 minutes. I am always bemused at the need to advertise for support of a national team, nevertheless some of these advertisement have been pretty good, the SA Cricket World Cup Team promo been a case in point. But the thought of having to watch green mutant rugby players do their thing in between programs for the next couple of months does not fill me with excitement. I am sorry, I just don't get the relevance! There's no stirring of the national pride. No 'feel good' value. They had something with the Zulu drummer and warriors for a split second but lost me with the mutants on all fours. Maybe it was my frustration at the team announcement proceeding that has prejudiced my opinion, but I just don't get it!

Here's the advert for those of you who have not seen it yet. Give it a watch and tell me what you think.

SA's Online Video Battle

My first post was inspired by me finding the much publicised FNB advert pleading with our President, Thabo Mbeki, to take some action against our perceived high levels of crime.
I found the leaked advert on a new video at www.MyVideo.co.za who claim to be South Africa's first online video sharing service. I was impressed, it seemed to be very YouTubish, easy to navigate, delivered the video stream rather efficiently and actually had some fun content.

I have since discovered another South African video sharing website www.zoopy.com. This one has a very 'cool' user interface and incorporates a Flickr type photo sharing service. It has some fun local and international content and appears to have great potential. I am looking forward to becoming a regular viewer.
The only problem? A great interface and concept is pretty useless if you can't actually view anything. Still being in beta we will cut them some slack, but I assume they are going to have to sort out the bandwidth required to deliver this type of content.

Now, I have heard that YouTube is developing a localised version of it's service at www.youtube.co.za.
No doubt they are going to become a powerful player. Watch this space!

Now for the reality check.

Their international counterparts simply had to be the first to set up a site, get some fun and preferrably controversial content uploaded and ensure that they had enough capital to afford the relatively high bandwidth costs. (Mainly as a result of the high usage) The populace flocked to them and the big boys paid billions for the right to get access to their users before a competitor did.
I am not sure how this is going to work in SA. Firstly hosting and streaming the content is going to cost a fair whack? Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the users are going to struggle to afford to spend any reasonable amount of time viewing video content. Tiny broadband bandwidth caps, high connection costs and a relatively small broadband market penetration mean a very small local audience. Dialup is no way to try and view online video and corporate firewalls will quickly close access to these sites so those avenues are not going to provide any more viewers.

All power to them, if they keep up and running long enough perhaps things will change. I look forward to the day.
