Digg takes some Muti

CEO Jay Adelson and founder Kevin Rose of internet phenomenon Digg.com, announced today that they will be purchasing a controlling stake in www.muti.co.za.

Reminiscing about the 'old' days (Digg.com was launched in December 2004) Rose commented how the community that is currently active at Muti reminds him of how the Digg community was when it was before it exploded to become one of the web's most active sites. The submitters, readers and bloggers regularly engage one another as they debate issues, some important, some superficial.

Adelson said that, much like Google, they saw South Africa as an entry point into the untapped African market. He sees Muti's simple, easy to use interface ideal for mobile integration, the device Africans will use to connect.

Although no amounts have been announced, it's widely believed that R77, 7 million has been negotiated for the 51% stake in Muti. It's still uncertain how the windfall is going to be split amongst Neville, Dave, Charle and Eric, reports Igotua Gain.

Digg.com goes down

I am a very very regular user of Digg.com. It's a place where latest news stories and blog posts are submitted and 'Dugg' with the most popular raising to to the top.
The Digg effect can send so much traffic to a site that it can cause the hosting server to literally crash, something that has become known as the 'Digg Effect.'

It amazes me that such a massive site can have 'down time.' One would imagine that they have server farms all over the world that would allow for contingency plans should there either be a problem or upgrades be implemented.

The graphic on the left only started appearing about 30mins after I first started trying to access the site, which says to me that this was not planned. Let's hope that this is now the result of something sinister.

Digg the Code in Song

Geoff Smith of podcast jingle fame, has written a song about the Digg HD code phenomenon. Titled "Digg the Code" it;s fun, catchy ditty that captures essence of the "movement" that formed around the attempt at Digg.com to censor the publishing of an encryption key for HD DVD's.

If you haven't read the story hears two local blogs that have summarised it nicely :

Where are the Digg chicks?

It seems that my question is not only being asked in South Africa.

Why are there so few women on Digg?
