Vodacom entices subscriber to run up massive SMS bill

Pensioner Hendrikus Wessels from Cape Town South Africa managed to run up bill of R48 000 (over $6,600) in just two weeks in the hope that he could win in Vodacom's "100 BMW's in 100 Days" competition.

The smses (text messages) cost R10 a shot and the promotion has a bonus draw each week for the subscriber that sends the most amount of entries. With a subscriber base of around 22 million, this promotion must be a massive money spinner for Vodacom.

As hard as I try to fell sorry for Mr Wessels, who has subsequently had his account suspended, I just can't.
There are many of premium priced competitions which charge from R5-00 to R30-00 an sms. In my opinion these 'competitions' merely are a very obvious form of gambling, making the companies that run them a hell of a lot of cash.

Eish!! readers, stay away from them.

I have just entered a rather fun competition. Imagine driving around town and seeing cars with a silver name badge reading something you came up with?
Renault are running a competition allowing you to do just that. Name the new Renault Scenic 4x2 and you will have the use of the vehicle for a month along with R1000-00 to go towards the petrol costs.

What makes you proudly South African? (Chance to win)

I came across this article @ www.southafrica.info which reported on the results of a survey conducted by The World Values Survey. It shows that those who proclaim themselves as proud to be South African has risen to 96%.

That got me thinking. If I had been surveyed, I would have responded in the positive to the question 'Are you proudly South African?' But what is it that I am proud about?

Is it the strength of our diversity? Is it the beauty and the variety of the South African landscape? Is it the achievement of democracy, against all odds?

Sure, all of the above are valid reasons to be a proud South African. But all that has been said and written about ad nauseam over the past 13 years. To me, I am proud of the potential I see and experience in my country. As the generations emerge free from the shackles of the conservative, debilitating past, with no baggage, I see that diversity becoming a catalyst for innovation in all spheres. The arts, technology, the environment & and even industry. South Africa has the potential to become a world leader.

What makes you 'Proudly South African?'
If you stay in Cape Town I have two tickets for the Cape Town Winex Wine Festival @ the Cape Town International Convention Centre to give away.
Send a mail or comment on what makes you Proudly South African TODAY [Midnight - 5 Sept 07] and the one Eishman chooses as the best submission will get them hand delivered tomorrow as the event is opens today and runs until Friday.

Sorry, all those non-Capetonians, feel free to add your voice though, it would be great to hear your reasons for being Proudly South African.

Win airtickets home

Eish!! is aimed at three bunch of people (demographics for you purists). Those living in SA, South African expats and those interested about what people in SA are talking about.

This short post is aimed at the expats. Homecoming Revolution is offering a set of return air tickets back home. In order to be in the running you will be required to complete a survey form, a small price to pay, me thinks. You can also see where in the world others who have entered are located on a big flagged filled map, which is quite fun.

Be sure to let me know if you win! Drinks will be on you.

Another chance to win

Afrigator has gotten quite a bit of traction with their "Win an Ipod" competition. Viral marketing at it's best. The SA blog aggregator wars are beginning to get interesting.
Nevertheless, an Ipod is an Ipod. So if you have not already entered click on the pic on the left and sign up with Afrigator. Just remember to use eishblog@gmail.com as your referrer, that way Eishman can also stand a chance to win an Ipod.

[What is Afrigator?

Afrigator is a social media aggregator and directory built especially for African digital citizens who publish and consume content on the Web. We would like to see it become your choice for African social media in one place, in one bite.

You can use Afrigator to index your blog, podcast, videocast or news site (i.e. any site that publishes an RSS feed) and market it to the rest of Africa and the world. You can also use it to discover new sites in the Afrosphere.
